How to Identify Mold in your Home Before It Spreads – A DRS Perspective

How to Identify Mold Growth in Your Home Before It Spreads

Mold is sneaky. It hides in damp corners, under sinks, behind walls, and even in your air ducts. By the time you notice it, chances are, it’s already spread further than you think. But catching mold early can save you a lot of trouble (and money).

Signs You Might Have Mold

  1. Musty Odor – If certain rooms smell damp or musty, that’s often a telltale sign of mold growing somewhere nearby.
  2. Discolored Spots – Mold can appear as black, green, or even white patches on walls, ceilings, or furniture.
  3. Allergy Symptoms – Frequent sneezing, itchy eyes, or respiratory issues that worsen indoors can indicate mold exposure.
  4. Warped Walls or Peeling Paint – Excess moisture behind walls can cause bubbling or peeling paint, a common sign of hidden mold.
  5. Previous Water Damage – If your home has had a flood, leak, or humidity issues, mold growth is likely.

Where Mold Loves to Hide

  • Bathrooms (especially in grout, under sinks, and around the shower)
  • Kitchens (under the sink and near appliances)
  • Basements and attics (poor ventilation and trapped moisture create the perfect mold breeding ground)
  • Around windows and doors (especially if condensation is frequent)

What to Do If You Find Mold

  • Don’t Disturb It – Scrubbing mold can send spores flying into the air, making it worse.
  • Ventilate the Area – Open windows and doors to reduce moisture buildup.
  • Call a Professional – Mold remediation is best left to experts who can safely remove and prevent future growth.
